Eclecticism is a conceptual approach or method that does not hold rigidly to a single doctrine, paradigm, or style. Instead, it draws upon diverse sources, theories, and systems, combining the best or most appropriate elements from each to form a cohesive whole. I don’t know about you, but at age 75, going on 76, I’ve had so many differing views of reality that by now have practically exhausted me! Born in the Southern United States, which is historically conservative in viewpoints, my grandmother was a devout Southern Baptist. She was an extremely giving person and constantly expressed her gratitude. My parents attended the Presbyterian Church which was the most prominent building in Lighthouse Point, Florida, where we lived from my age 8-15. Unfortunately, I never had a discussion with them whether there was a serious profound decision to choose another sect of Christianity or not. In 1970, at age 20 and during the Vietnam War, philosophical questions became front and center and I chose a staunch anti-war position and delved into Daoism, Zen Buddhism, Socialism, and also became a vegetarian. After visiting India for three months in 1973, 18 months later I became involved in a strict mono-theistic branch of Hinduism primarily because it is based on the vegetarian diet. So, fairly eclectic you could say: Western Platonism the rational basis for Christianity, Chinese thought which combines Lao Tzu, Confucious, and Buddha, and Indian thought which contains multiple ways of approaching metaphysics. For the last 15 years I’ve lived in Hawai’i where animism is the worldview that all things in nature – including animals, plants, rocks, rivers, weather systems, and even inanimate objects – possess a spiritual essence, soul, or consciousness. It is the foundational belief that the world is alive, interconnected, and full of agency. Aloha means the breath of life and Pono the concept of righteousness, balance, and harmony. Perhaps you may imagine that I’m incredibly fortunate to have had such an opportunity to not only study different views of reality, but to live, experience, and engage in them proactively. And, that is exactly the purpose and drive behind this digital effort to share the multivarious views of reality that are now so amazingly available to hear, read, and study on the miraculous World Wide Web!!!
