We want to extend our further appreciation to Consul Nahas Ali, CGI SFO, for attending our Yoga Day annual event on behalf of the Government of India and sponsor Air India. Nahas is pictured third from right attending on behalf of the San Francisco Indian Consulate. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means “to yoke,” “to join,” or “to unite.” It signifies the act of bringing together the mind, body, and spirit, as well as the yoking of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness. The four primary schools of Yoga; Raj (Hatha), Karma, Bhakti, and Jnana are all based on uniting, connecting, yoking, and as far as I’m concerned; loving with. Raja Yoga (The Path of Meditation): Also many refer to as Hatha, is the “royal” path that focuses on mental mastery and contemplation. It uses deep meditation and the systematic Eight-Limbed Path (which includes physical postures and breathing) to calm the mind and learn to love oneself. Karma Yoga (The Path of Action): The yoga of selfless service. It involves doing your duty for others with a good heart and without expecting recognition or reward. When you engage in duty without expecting reward that is considered the purest form of love like a mother for her child. Bhakti Yoga (The Path of Devotion): The yoga of love and emotional surrender. It centers on seeing and honoring the divine in everything, often expressed through chanting, prayer, and worship. Jnana Yoga (The Path of Wisdom): The yoga of intellect and knowledge. It is a philosophical path of deep inquiry, self-study, and studying sacred texts to understand the true nature of reality. This is the more philosophical path which means “The Love of Knowledge”. So this ancient path of Yoga, received from practically time immemorial from the Indian subcontinent, is of supreme value in these tumultuous times! This is not an injunction for everyone to necessarily take up one of these four paths directly, but to merely understand that Yoga is not a religion, but a system of self development that is available to all and as The Beatles released the single in July of 1967 (The Summer of Love), “All You Need is Love!”
